![]() But to see them together in these last few chapters actually shows that 1) Alyss is actually a lot more mature and less destructive than what was thought before 2) the sisters actually have a much more stable relationship too. Before this meeting, it was implied that although Alice & Alyss shared a body, they were opposites in personality with each other, and it was implied that they probably fought each other a lot in “taking turns” in the outside world. What is even more, surprising to me, the reader, is that Alice immediately doesn’t question her sister’s motives and accepts her comfort and her explanation as well as her memories. Her willing sacrifice of her memories to protect her sister belies a level of their relationship that hadn’t been recognized before: that Alyss really does care for the well-being of Alice. The two major characters “switch” perceptions of themselves in this chapter by the knowledge they have gained, which contrasts with the physical state of their being. Those who see themselves as full now see themselves as empty, and vice versa. The movement of bodies, hearts, minds, and, in this case, souls themselves shifting from one spot to another. Vacancy, however, can be interpreted as a temporary condition, like occupants in a hotel room. ![]() The title word “Vacant” refers to emptiness for lack of a body, which is where several characters are at the moment, or at least are perceived to be that way. This Retrace was all about various foils, long separated, finally interacting with one another: Alice & Alyss, Echo & Oz (and to a lesser extent, Gilbert & Vincent, and Oscar & Zai). ![]()
